Boarding Information

The boarding facility located at just 300 metres from the Academy opened its doors to students on the High School site first opened in 1992. as demand has increased, it has been expanded and now we have provision to house up to 175 students.

Facilities

The boarding block is a large one-storey building with two wings separated by a central study area.

Accommodation is in either double or dormitory style rooms (depending on demand for places). Students have a desk and reading lamp each, their own drawer with hasp for padlock, wardrobes and storage drawers. All bedding is provided and laundry is done daily. Television and video facilities are provided in the common rooms. These include connection to DSTV.

A new addition to facilities is the provision of a resources room containing computers, one of which is connected to the Internet, and other study aids within the house. The facility caters for limited recreational activities such as swimming, basketball and indoor games like board games and pool.

Contact

We appreciate that many parents are a long way from Nairobi, or even Kenya, and contact can be a major worry. The following is a list of numbers for general use or emergencies:

Main school telephone line (+254 2) 4348195
Fax (+254 2) 4349451
E-mail; info@aslkenya.com

The students have access to a payphone for social calls and can be given access to the main telephones for International calls. If you are phoning the school, we would ask you to avoid school hours and prep times except in emergency.

Staffing and Supervision

At all times of the boarding day, there are members of staff on duty. In case of medical emergencies during the boarding day or at night we use an ambulance call-out service.Treatment is initially paid for by the hostel but will be invoiced to the parents or guardians with the next term's fees.

When a student is taken to hospital, we make every effort to contact the parents or guardians as quickly as we can. Parents are advised to take out medical insurance, as treatment can be costly.
On weekday evenings, there is a supervised prep session.

Pastoral System

St. Austin's Academy takes its role as guardians very seriously. We have a pastoral system within the school, which provides a means for the discussion of problems and worries. Naturally, any student is free to approach any member of the school or boarding staff at any time if they have a pressing worry or problem.

The Boarding Houses open on the afternoon of the day before term starts. They close on the day term ends. Outside these times, students must make arrangements to return home or stay with local guardians. We provide transport to and from the airports and bus stations, provided students use the correct days and give transport details in advance.

Start of term

Transport is provided on the day before the start of term and the first day of term. Please call or fax the school giving time and place of arrival.

Religious Observance

St. Austins Academy as an International School has no specific religious affiliation. However, We strongly believe in respecting the beliefs and customs of our students. Transport will be provided (when available) to places of worship at reasonable times.

Kenya observes all Christian and most Muslim Holy days as national holidays, and the school obviously keeps these too. Students are not allowed to take individual days off for other festivals. However, if a family has a special desire to observe a particular day, We will allow an exit, provided We are given sufficient notice (two days will suffice). For Muslim students who observe Ramadan, We provide meals at times to suit their fasting.
